ALANNA

After dropping off Greg, I make my way back to my apartment. Thank goodness I have plans because Colleen is playing the Wicked soundtrack upstairs at full blast. She’s stomping on the floor too. I can only assume that she’s dancing. After greeting Benji, I head to my closet. I want to wear something sexy but not too sexy. Everything lately has been casual and light… even though I’m starting to wish it was something more. Starting to. Who am I kidding myself? I pull on a sheer black tank top and a pair of ripped blue jeans. I pull half my hair up into a top knot as the rest cascades down my back. There. Casual and sexy, but not too sexy. That’s what I want… right?

Driving to the address that Cooper sent me, I realize my fingers are nervously tapping the steering wheel as I get closer to my destination. This isn’t like the cookie-cutter area of the suburbs where all the houses look the same. All the houses here look unique and the lawns are bursting with colorful flora. Strange. This isn’t where I expected him to be living. I thought maybe he’d live in a condo downtown or maybe a big beach house like Rory and Maverick. Not out here.

As I turn the corner, I see his house. It looks like a cute powder-blue gingerbread house with white pillars and cute windows. There’s a lattice fence surrounding the property but the openings are large enough to see right through to the beautiful garden inside.

Parking on the side of the road, I take a breath before getting out. As I walk down the sidewalk, I notice activity further up the street. Some of the neighborhood kids are playing a game of street hockey. They’re not all kids. I notice someone tall and fit playing with them… Cooper. He’s wearing a black t-shirt and sweatpants. His hair is pulled back. He’s just as focused here as he is during a Blades game.

“Over here!” A short boy frantically taps his stick against the pavement.

A tall girl with a mouthful of braces passes the ball to him. Cooper tries to poke the ball away but the short boy manages to keep it to himself. Amused, I stand and watch. Cooper goes easy on the kids, going slow enough that they can keep up with him… but he also doesn’t hesitate to show off his skills when he can. Facing off against the tallest and most skilled boy out there, Cooper slickly steals the ball away, does a few fancy moves to keep it away from him, and passes the ball to a short girl on the other side of the street. The short girl taps the ball into the net and scores a goal.

“Yes!” She does a celebratory dance.

Cooper high-fives her. “I told you taking a shot from there would work!”

“And it did! That was peak!” Her eyes light up. “I’m gonna go tell my dad about this.”

She drops her hockey stick and runs up the lawn toward her house.
